Cycle tours in Hessen - Our tips

Cycle tour on the Kuppenrhön cycle path

The 30-kilometre-long Kuppenrhön tour takes you around the two northernmost elevations of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, the Dreienberg and the Landecker. Your cycle tour in Hesse offers a day trip through the hilly landscape of the northern Rhön with magnificent panoramic views. Historical sights such as Germany's oldest lime tree in Schenklengsfeld, the fortified moated castle ruins in Friedewald or the Huguenot House in Gethsemane also provide variety along the route.

The Solztal cycle path in Hessen

The cycle tour takes you from Bad Hersfeld (railroad station) to Schenklengsfeld along the route of the former Bad Hersfeld district railroad. As a combined cycle and footpath, it leads for approx. 32 km through the scenic Solztal valley with its lovely nature. Where once the trains of the district railroad between Werratal and Fuldatal transported passengers and goods, today cyclists, skaters and other exercise-seekers can be found on the asphalted railroad embankment from Schenklengsfeld to Bad Hersfeld.

The beer garden at the Weitz equestrian center in Schenksolz or the restaurants in Schenklengsfeld are ideal places to take a relaxing break.

Cycle tour on the Hesse railroad cycle path

The Hesse Railway Cycle Route between Bad Hersfeld and Hanau is 245 kilometers long and runs along former railroad lines through the low mountain landscape of the Rhön and Vogelsberg nature parks. The cycle paths on disused railroad lines are of the highest quality and, thanks to the low gradients, also offer families an enjoyable cycle tour. The route also offers the varied landscape panorama of the Kuppenrhön with its wooded hills of volcanic origin along near-natural river courses. Additional experiences are promised by places of cultural and historical significance, such as the Celtic world on the Glauberg, the Barbarossa town of Gelnhausen, the castle town of Schlitz, baroque Fulda and the world's largest Romanesque church ruins in Bad Hersfeld, where the annual theater festival attracts an illustrious audience from far and wide.

Mountain bike tour through the Hessian countryside

Hersfeld - Bebra - Friedewald - Hersfeld

The route is partly on paved cycle paths and partly on forest and off-road tracks, which are, however, easy to ride on. One section of approx. 5 km is a forest path with a relatively constant, steeper incline, which is a little more strenuous. On the other hand, it rolls from the planetarium in Friedewald down into the valley. The route continues on a very beautiful, paved cycle path along the main road, which offers wonderful views of nature. This route continues to Sorga (former railroad line), then a short climb and then it's back to Bad Hersfeld.

The circular route of approx. 40 km is easy to complete in approx. 3-4 hours.
