Festival town of Bad Hersfeld with the abbey ruins

The spa and festival town in the heart of the Waldhessen region is home to the famous Bad Hersfeld Festival, which takes place every year from June to August in the famous abbey ruins. Numerous sightseeing tours, a stroll through the town and a boat trip on the Fulda are definitely worthwhile. Worth seeing are the town church, the church square, the Katharinenturm tower, the Klausturm tower, the stumbling blocks, the Konrad-Duden memorial and the Konrad-Zuse memorial. The abbey ruins are considered the largest Romanesque basilica north of the Alps and are now the largest Romanesque church ruins in the world.

World Heritage Site Bergpark Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in the documenta city of Kassel has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. The baroque complex with the mighty castle, the statue of Hercules and the 350-metre-long cascade was created at the beginning of the 18th century. The historic waterworks with the towering statue of Hercules are an architectural and extraordinary masterpiece and offer a unique cultural landscape.

Wartburg Eisenach World Heritage Site

As one of the most famous and popular castles in Germany, the almost thousand-year-old Wartburg towers majestically over Eisenach. It has been a fortified stronghold, magnificent residence, hostel, place of refuge and retreat for its inhabitants over the centuries. Wartburg Castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. In 1521, Martin Luther found shelter and inspiration for the translation of the New Testament in the opulently decorated buildings and chambers.

Hainich National Park World Heritage Site

Since June 2011, the “Ancient Beech Forests of Germany” have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These are selected areas with lowland and low mountain beech forests, including the Hainich National Park in Thuringia. As part of the “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Ancient Beech Forests of Germany” World Heritage Site, its location makes it an inviting place for excursions between nature and culture. The treetop path leads visitors into an otherwise inaccessible area of the national park and offers a fantastic view over the entire Hainich.

Towns worth seeing in the surrounding area

Alsfeld with its interesting old town and old town hall, Bad Salzungen (Thuringia) with its healing and mineral springs, the Wartburg town of Eisenach, Fulda with its baroque cathedral, Romanesque St. Michael's Church, city and royal palace or the documenta city of Kassel.

Bach House & Luther House in Eisenach

Johann Sebastian Bach's birthplace is home to the world's largest museum dedicated to the composer. The historical part of the museum offers insights into the life of the town's family of musicians around 1700, while the new building is dedicated to Bach's musical works.

The Lutherhaus Eisenach is one of the oldest and most beautiful half-timbered houses in Thuringia - and one of the most important sights in Eisenach, Martin Luther's “dear city”. It presents the life of Martin Luther as a student, reformer and Bible translator.

Automobile world Eisenach

Cars have been built in Eisenach for over 100 years. Where the famous Wartburg once rolled off the production line, today a lovingly maintained exhibition presents the eventful history of car manufacturing in Eisenach - from the DIXI to the Opel.
