The historic waterworks with the towering statue of Hercules are an architectural and extraordinary masterpiece and offer a unique cultural landscape.

Wartburg Eisenach World Heritage Site

As one of the best-known and most popular castles in Germany, the almost thousand-year-old Wartburg towers majestically over Eisenach. It has been a fortified stronghold, magnificent residence, hostel, place of refuge and retreat for its inhabitants over the centuries. Wartburg Castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. In 1521, Martin Luther found shelter and inspiration for the translation of the New Testament in the opulently decorated buildings and chambers.

Since June 2011, the ‘Ancient Beech Forests of Germany’ have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These are selected areas with lowland and low mountain beech forests, including the Hainich National Park in Thuringia. As part of the ‘Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Ancient Beech Forests of Germany’ World Heritage Site, its location makes it an inviting place for excursions between nature and culture. Towns worth seeing in the surrounding area

Alsfeld with its historic town centre and old town hall, Bad Salzungen (Thuringia) with its medicinal and mineral springs, the Wartburg town of Eisenach, Fulda with its baroque cathedral, Romanesque St. Michael's Church, city and royal palace and the documenta city of Kassel.
